About Floating Point Marine

My Story
I’m Darryl Thomas, and I established Floating Point Marine Services in 2025. Based in Martinez, CA, the company serves the areas surrounding the Carquinez Strait, San Francisco Bay, and western portions of the Delta.
After a successful but decreasingly fulfilling career in the tech industry, I felt a need to pursue a career that focused on my interests and passions while harnessing and putting to use the skills and experience I’ve accumulated over decades.
As I became more immersed within the local boating community, opportunities arose to advise other boaters regarding their Marine Electrical and Electronics systems and to perform installation services. I am able to call upon my prior experience in the fields of Network & Security Engineering, Systems Integration, and Software Development to help troubleshoot and architect solutions.
I’m an FCC-licensed Amateur Extra class HAM, GMRS, and Restricted Radiotelephone Operator. I can help you verify your radios and antennas are performing as well as they should and make recommendations when they aren’t.
I prioritize safety and recognize the important distinctions that exist between terrestrial and marine electrical systems. To this end, I have studied and adhere to the standards established by the American Boat & Yacht Council. I became an ABYC Certified Marine Electrical Advisor in 2024 and earned my NMEA Marine Electronics Installer (Basic & NMEA 2000) and ABYC Marine Corrosion Advisor Certifications in 2025.

My Commitment to You
I believe transparency and honesty are fundamental values, and I want you to be fully informed regarding my qualifications.
I am still building my skill set and gaining experience in the marine services field. As with most industries in which doing the job right is not only expected but also a critical matter of safety, it takes years of experience to build the knowledge and skills necessary to become a trusted technician.
I am on that path, but I recognize that I am not yet there. Organizations such as the American Boat & Yacht Council have established an important distinction between those who have the years of hands-on experience needed to be recognized as a certified technician and those who have the know-how and theory but have yet to apply that know-how in the field. I am certified as an Advisor, not a Technician. I intend to earn the status of Technician as an employee of an established boat yard or marine services provider.
As an ABYC Certified Advisor, I am qualified to inspect your vessel’s electrical system and to make recommendations to improve the safety and efficiency of your AC & DC installation, including wiring, termination, overcurrent protection, and load balancing. I can also troubleshoot specific issues.
My extensive experience with electronics and networking qualifies me to help you analyze and troubleshoot your existing marine electronics system(s) and to make recommendations, but I am not yet certified by the National Marine Electronics Association nor any individual marine electronics manufacturers. I am currently pursuing these certifications.
My commitment to you is that I will never misrepresent my abilities or put you or your vessel at risk by performing work I am not qualified to perform. If at any point there is any doubt as to whether I can help you in a manner that is safe, I will refer you to a qualified technician.
